Magnesium is an essential mineral, which not only promotes the function of hundreds of enzymes, but also plays an essential role in the build-up of bones and teeth in addition to calcium. It also contributes greatly to the proper functioning of the nervous system and keeping blood pressure in a healthy range.
The purpose of the test is to determine the level of magnesium in blood.

The test is recommended in case of weakness, nausea, diarrhoea or arrhythmia, as well as in case of abnormal calcium or potassium levels.
A blood sample taken from a vein is necessary for the test.

Low levels of the mineral can occur if the patient’s magnesium intake is insufficient or not absorbed or excreted in excessive amounts.
Deficiency may also occur in case of prolonged diarrhoea, gastrointestinal diseases, hypoparathyroidism, uncontrolled diabetes, after surgery, or gestational toxaemia.
If the mineral is present in the body in higher-than-normal amounts, it may indicate a problem with kidney excretion or excessive magnesium supplementation.
Increased mineral levels may occur in case of hypothyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, renal failure, diabetic acidosis, dehydration, or taking magnesium-containing medications (laxatives, stomach acid reducers).
In all cases, please consult the specialist who ordered the test with the result, as the results of further tests may be required for an accurate diagnosis.
