Infectology

Infectology is a specialty dealing with infectious diseases. It is closely related to epidemiology. Given that infectious diseases affect the whole body, the infectologist may also work with physicians in other specialties.

Thanks to prevention, i.e. vaccinations, most infectious diseases can now be completely prevented, but it is important to note that more recent infectious diseases have emerged in the recent period.

When to see an infectologist?

In case the patient has had a febrile condition of unknown origin for a long time (for weeks) and it has not been possible to determine the exact cause or the background of the disease with the usual examinations.

• Symptoms after tick bite
• Lymph node swelling in any part of the body
• Persistent digestive complaints
• Jaundice
• Infectious diseases of the liver
• Fever, appearance of rash
• Symptoms after contact with animals
• Evaluation and interpretation of previous serological results
• Determination of antibiotic treatment

What happens during the infectology examination?

Physical examination, laboratory examinations and serological (antibody) examinations follow the recording of the medical history and the detailed examination of the patient. The presence of a particular infectious disease can be confirmed by bacteriological culture.

What is serology?

As a result of bacterial, fungal or viral infections, the body usually produces antibodies and immunoglobulins produced by the immune system. Serology examines their properties, reactions, and interactions.

Treatment options

For most diseases, treatment is aimed at killing the pathogens. Effective medication can be used against diseases caused by bacterial, viral or other pathogens.
