GPT (glutamate pyruvate alanine aminotransferase) or ALT (alanine aminotransferase)
GPT is the most abundant enzyme in the liver and it occurs in the kidneys, heart and muscles in a smaller amount. It is involved in the metabolism of amino acids. Together with several items, including the GOT enzyme, we examine it to evaluate pathological processes in the liver.
What can the result indicate?
The increase in GPT levels may be due to the following reasons:
- Acute hepatitis
- Malignant tumour of the liver
- Liver cirrhosis (extensive hepatocellular destruction)
- Hepatic impairment due to the use of certain drugs (e.g. cholesterol-lowering, contraceptive pill)
- Regular contact with chemicals
- Gallstones
- Diseases of the pancreas
- Inflammatory diseases of the musculoskeletal system and skeletal muscle
What to do after the test?
The test alone cannot diagnose any disease, and in all cases consult an internist or haematologist to determine the exact diagnosis and required therapy.
