It enters the bloodstream when the absorbed nutrients or cells in the body are broken down. More than three-quarters are excreted in the urine through the kidneys, while the remainder is excreted in the faeces. It can be high if too much is produced or not excreted in the required amount, but protein-rich foods (e.g., offal), excessive alcohol consumption, and certain medications also increase its level.
