In the liver, copper bounds to protein, forming a ceruloplasmin complex and then enters the bloodstream. Its most important function is to maintain the optimal iron balance of the body. Since copper is present in the blood in a 95% bound form of ceruloplasmin, this test is used, among other things, to diagnose Wilson&#8217;s disease. Wilson&#8217;s disease is a rare, genetically inherited disease in which copper accumulates in various organ systems (liver, brain, nervous system) of the human body due to a congenital deficiency of ceruloplasmin.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid shape_divider_top-none shape_divider_bottom-none\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12 sc_layouts_column_icons_position_left\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2 style=\"text-align: left\" class=\"vc_custom_heading\" >What does the test show?<\/h2>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>The test shows the ceruloplasmin level of blood.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid shape_divider_top-none shape_divider_bottom-none\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12 sc_layouts_column_icons_position_left\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2 style=\"text-align: left\" class=\"vc_custom_heading\" >In which cases is it recommended to perform the test?<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6 sc_layouts_column_icons_position_left\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The physician may request the determination of the level of ceruloplasmin if Wilson&#8217;s disease is suspected in case of the following symptoms: jaundice, fatigue, anaemia, behavioural disorder, nausea, tremors, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rarely, it might be ordered with a copper test if copper deficiency is suspected, but also for the diagnosis of Menkes syndrome (X chromosome-related recessively inherited copper deficiency).<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\" class=\"vc_custom_heading\" >What sample is needed for the test?<\/h2>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p>A blood sample taken from a vein is needed for the test.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\" class=\"vc_custom_heading\" >What can the result indicate?<\/h2>\n\t<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element\" >\n\t\t<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Low levels of ceruloplasmin may indicate Wilson&#8217;s disease and Menkes syndrome, however, it is not enough to determine the level of ceruloplasmin to diagnose the former, further tests are required.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Elevated levels of ceruloplasmin are caused by, among other things, inflammation, infections, and cancer, but also pregnancy and taking oral contraceptives.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-6 sc_layouts_column_icons_position_left\"><div
