Protein C is part of a system that prevents excessive blood clots. Protein C and Protein S, complementing and strengthening each other, adjust the rate of blood clot formation so that blood clots form only at the site of injury (not across the body). If the activity as well as the concentration of both proteins is normal, then the regulation of coagulation is also adequate.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

What is the purpose of the test?<\/h2>\n\t

\n\t\t\t

The test reveals the cause of the thrombotic event. It can be used to determine if a patient has an inherited or acquired Protein C deficiency.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

In which cases is it recommended to perform the test?<\/h2>\n\t
\n\t\t
\n\t\t\t

In case of thromboembolism (deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism) of unknown origin, if the patient’s newborn has a severe coagulation disorder or if one of the patient’s close relatives has an inherited Protein C deficiency.<\/p>\n

A test for decreased Protein C activity should be performed again prior to diagnosis, due to the presence of conditions that temporarily cause a change in protein level or function.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

What sample is needed for the test?<\/h2>\n\t

Plasma is required for the test. A blood sample taken in a citrate tube is suitable for this as citrate prevents clotting. After drawing blood, the blood in the tube is circulated so that the anticoagulant can work.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

What can the result indicate?<\/h2>\n\t

\n\t\t\t

Low levels or lack of Protein C indicate predisposition to thrombosis. Low protein levels can occur in a patient with liver disease as well as in a person with inherited Protein C deficiency.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n
