What is the purpose of the examination?<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The soft tissues surrounding the joints and bones can be excellently examined by MRI.<\/p>\n

During the examination of the diseases of the knee, i.e. the condition and position of the bones that make up the knee, the articular cartilage, the cartilage ring of the knee joint (meniscus), the patella, and the cartilage of the patella, and all the ligaments that support the knee are included in the knee MRI scan.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

What kind of preparation is required before the examination?<\/h2>\n\t

\n\t\t\t

In all cases, it is recommended that you consult your doctor for details before the knee MRI.<\/p>\n

The native examination requires no special preparation, but you should not eat for 6 hours before a scan with contrast agent!<\/p>\n

It is important to know that due to the strong magnetic field, it is forbidden to bring any metal, device or object containing metal into the examination room! This also applies to jewellery and piercings in the body.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Are there any side effects of the examination?<\/h2>\n\t

\n\t\t\t

Knee MRI examination has no side effects, rarely the contrast agent can cause a reaction. In the case of pre-existing known allergies, examination with contrast agent is not performed.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

How is a knee MRI performed?<\/h2>\n\t

\n\t\t\t

The MRI device resembles a large, thick ring with a table moving at the bottom, the patient lying on it as instructed by the doctor.<\/p>\n

Examination of the joints is usually done lying on your back. However, some scans may require tilting and holding the joint to make the best shot.<\/p>\n

The MRI device makes a noisy, clicking noise, the intensity of which can be reduced by using earplugs.<\/p>\n

The Medicare MRI machine is called a \u201cclosed device\u201d, so the patient may feel confined. However, the good news is that this can be mitigated by a larger than average inside diameter of 70 centimetres.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

When can the test not be performed?<\/h2>\n\t

\n\t\t\t

When there is any magnetically responsive material in the body (e.g., joint prosthesis, nail, screw, implant). These can move out of place during the examination in the strong magnetic field. In severe cases, they can cause injury and the resulting image of the organ being examined can become invaluable. Today, after surgeries, patients receive a document stating whether or not they can be examined with MRI with the built-in implant. Please bring this with you in all cases.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n
